Here are a few more pictures from last night's scouting session on the ranch. One nice little group of bucks that will be big one day. The second is of the largest mule deer I've seen this year, unfortunately it's a bad picture. He's to the right of the one antlered buck, you can just make out the outline of his antlers in the wheat stubble. He is a 30 inch 4x4 with a 4 inch kicker on one side. He will push 190 when it's all said and done. Really hopeful we knock down a few of these big … [Read more...]

Mountain Lion Spotted While Scouting Mule Deer and Whitetail on the Idaho Ranch
While doing a routine scouting trip on the ranch last evening we were in for a bit of a treat. This mountain lion was out doing a little hunting of his own! Very rarely do you get to see cougars out hunting or doing anything for that matter. They are so elusive that usually the only way you can see them is by following a well trained pack of hounds to the tree. This cat, however, was out in broad daylight hunting the edge of a wheat field. We were very fortunate to get to watch him for a … [Read more...]
Idaho mule deer guide story continued……
Continuing on with the story by Idaho mule deer guide Larry Hatter, published in 2015 issue of Horns and Hooks magazine....... Once I’d acquired my position overlooking the canyon it didn’t take me long to find my first subjects. Down a steep grassy slope, some three hundred yards distant, a group of six does filed uniformly out of a brush choked gully and began to feed. Soon followed three gangly fork-horned bucks, most likely last season’s fawns. … [Read more...]
Idaho Black Bear Guide / Outfitter
Our 20th season as an Idaho black bear guide / outfitter here is starting off early. It's pushing 70 degrees and the bears are our out in force. Usually it takes a few weeks for them to start hitting baits, but they are already hearing the supper bell this year. Got a picture of this nice boar off of the Browning Strike Force just today. Notice how he has no rub marks yet. This is what I would consider a nice representative black bear. He's not huge but has a perfect hide. Most hunters … [Read more...]
Hunting whitetail deer in the rut on Idaho ranch
We are really pleased to be hunting whitetail deer in the rut on our Idaho ranch again. The rut begins around the 3rd of November and season is over December 1st. Having several thousand acres at our disposal, we can easily accommodate groups of friends and family. We use tree stands, ground blinds and spot and stalk methods for our whitetail deer. Whatever works to bag your buck, that's what we'll do. We ask that hunters practice shooting out to 300 yards. During the rut, bucks will be … [Read more...]
Idaho cougar hunt 2016
The books are already open for our Idaho cougar hunts for the winter of 2016 / 2017. Spaces are limited as again we will only be taking a half dozen or so mountain lion hunters for that season. Several weeks are still available however and if an Idaho cougar hunt suites your fancy don't be afraid to give us a call. Be glad to answer any questions you may have. Also ask for availability of wing shooting on our new ranch here in Idaho as well as the possibility of a combination hunt … [Read more...]
Spring Color Phase Black Bear Hunt
Out working on the ranch this afternoon and spotted a good looking auburn colored black bear meandering across the hillside. Winter was short lived this year and our bears are already on the move. Right now they'll concentrate on eating fresh green shoots and early flowering birds beak but before long they'll be hitting baits! Idaho has a healthy black bear population and a high percentage of color phase bears to boot. This comes from natural selection. Bears that live in semi open … [Read more...]
Draw Dates for Mule Deer Hunting in Idaho
Spring is right around the corner and a quick reminder to everyone that the draw dates for mule deer hunting here in Idaho are in May. Remember if you are an archery hunter this won't be an issue, but if you're looking for that rifle tag, May is the month to put in. Typically draw results will be known by the end of June so you won't have to wait long to find out if you're going on that monster muley hunt with rifle. We realize drawings in different states can be a pain to learn, so here at … [Read more...]
guaranteed or over the counter archery mule deer tag hunt in idaho
Progress is going nicely on our new private ranch and just wanted to remind everyone that we have guaranteed or over the counter tags for archery mule deer here in Idaho. Our archery season takes place in September, most hunting taking place between production fields where the deer feed and brushy draws they seek for security. Our rifle tags are still on a draw system, but a new initiative to double the amount of tags in our area is underway and if this goes through it will be twice as easy … [Read more...]
Best trail camera for whitetail deer or mule deer hunting
The debate rages when it comes to what is the best trail camera for whitetail deer or mule deer hunting. You'll hear plenty of folks talk about Primos, Bushnell or Reconyx, but for my money the best trail cameras on the market are made by Browning. Browning makes several models that are top of the line. The Strike Force and Spec Ops are two of my favorites. Both bost 10 mp picture taking quality as well as under 1 second trigger time and under 3 second recovery time. Recovery time … [Read more...]
