Field Dressing Trophy Alaska Big Game

Correct field dressing techinques in Alaska are of the utmost importance!

Whether your hunting the hulking bull moose , the nomadic caribou or the reagle dall sheep, how you preserve your meat is just as important as how you preserve the trophy aspects of your game.  The edible portions of your kill, dilectable in deed, can bring about just as man fond memories of the hunts as a mount on the wall.

The first step in Alaska game care is to render it as soon as possible.  Non desireable portions of the animal should be removed and discarded imediately.  The next step especially with your larger species, such as moose , is to split the larger sections of meat to allow cool air to circulate throughout.

Once the meat has been sectioned and packed to camp it is very important to get  each individual portion off the ground so air can continually circulate around it.  Hanging from a tree or a game poll is a good option.  Usually in the north land, this will keep your meat in good condition for several days but in some instances, where the weather is unseasonably warm you may have to take further measures.  Several times I’ve had to lay my caribou hams in a rushing creek to keep the mid-day heat from them and have even burried my sheep meat in the tundra a time or two.  Most people don’t realize it but mother nature has created a perfect little refrigerator about  12 inches below the surface of most Alaska soil and can easily be utilized if you remembered to bring a shovel.

Anyway these few techiniques will go a long way toward preserving the table fare from your next big hunt in Alaska hunt .  Hope to see you soon in the blacktail deer woods or the caribou tundra!
