Antelope hunting
is one of the most enjoyable and action packed hunts in the
west
!
For me hunting trips are meant to be an escape from stress, a chance to bond with your hunting partners and a way to just have a good old time in general. It can be tough to accomplish this on your more pressure packed hunts, say for trophy whitetail or dall sheep , but the antelope is perfect. Normally, antelope are in abundance in their typical home range. They spend their time in wide open sagebrush country as their main defense is their great eye sight and speed. This creates ample viewing opportunity for the hunter with many a day’s antelope count in the several hundreds. The mid September weather is always comfortable, with the only exception being some wind that accompanies the wide open spaces. Antelope country is also unique in that it is very nostalgic and the typical view of the the old west is where antelope abound.
Really, the most important aspect of a successful antelope hunt is how accurate you are with your weapon of choice. You’ll see plenty of bucks on any given hunt, but rarely will they be up close and personal. A hunter should be comfortable shooting 300 or more yards in order to guarantee a successful hunt. I’d recommend a lighter, flat shooting round in this case. Anything from a .243 on up will be just fine for any buck antelope.
And remember, don’t forget to enjoy the unique, out west vacation aspect of this hunt . Whether, its in Wyoming, New Mexico or Arizona what once was the west is still there. You just have to look. Stop in for a cowboy breakfast or visit a local watering hole and take in the last of the old west. This is supposed to be a relaxing, unique experience. So make it that way!
